Roto Village : Connected to the digital world for the first time.

Deep in the mountainous heart of Makira Island in the Solomon Islands lies the remote village of Roto—a name that translates to “dark” in the local Makiran language, a nod to the area’s frequent cloud cover and daily rainfall. Surrounded by steep ridges and dense jungle, Roto remains largely cut off from the modern world.

Reaching Roto is no easy task. After a grueling seven-hour boat ride from the provincial capital of Kirakira, our team arrived determined to bring lasting change to this isolated community. The journey itself highlights the village’s inaccessibility, underscoring the critical need for reliable rural communication infrastructure.

Establishing Rural Internet Access Through Satellite Connectivity

In partnership with the local logging camp, and following weeks of planning and coordination, we successfully deployed Kacific Satellite Broadband in Roto. This initiative is part of our broader mission to bring satellite internet to rural areas across the Solomon Islands or access to telecommunications or the internet, the arrival of high-speed satellite broadband marks a major milestone for the people of Roto. For the first time, villagers and logging camp workers can connect with the outside world, opening doors to communication, online education, healthcare resources, business tools, and more.

Empowering Communities Through Digital Inclusion

This project is a tangible step toward digital inclusion in the Solomons Islands, particularly in hard-to-reach communities like Roto. Connectivity enables:

  • Improved access to information and services

  • Remote learning and eHealth opportunities

  • Business support and financial inclusion

  • Emergency communication in times of natural disaster

By linking Roto to the global digital ecosystem, we are not only improving day-to-day life but also building resilience and opportunity for future generations.

A Commitment to Connectivity for All

At the heart of our work is the belief that no community should be left behind in the digital age. The successful installation of satellite broadband in Roto Village demonstrates what can be achieved with determination, collaboration, and the right technology.

As we continue our mission across the Solomon Islands, Roto stands as a symbol of progress—proof that even the most remote villages can be connected, empowered, and transformed.
